Mountain Biking

Detroit Mountain Recreational Area is an excellent destination for both Cross Country (XC) and downhill mountain biking enthusiasts. With over 15 miles of single-track trails, we offer trails for every type of skill level.

Our scenic XC singletrack trails offer riders options to loop and link as many miles as desired along with a memorable experience. Our downhill trails are perfect for the advanced technical riders who have experience taking jumps, drops, and steep descents. To access the downhill trails, use the Sasquatch switchback climb or take the chair lift access option on weekends starting Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend.

Sandals and open toe footwear are not allowed. Please wear closed toe shoes.

Group Ride Opportunities:

Group rides are a great way to meet fellow bikers and learn new trails! Even if you are new to mountain biking, group rides are welcome to all different skill levels.

New to Mountain Biking?

Did you know?

Mountain Biking at a speed between 12-15MPH for 30 minutes burns about 546 calories. The faster you pedal, and the steeper the incline, the more you burn.

Maintenance:

Before you start biking, whether it’s your own bike, or a rental from Detroit Mountain, always make sure to check it’s in good working order. Check things like your wheels, drive train (chain, crank set, cogs, shifters, derailleurs), and brakes.

Nutrition:

Hydration is key! Make sure to always have a water bottle with you. We have vending machines at Detroit Mountain that you can buy water from, too. Continuously drink water during your ride to remain hydrated.

Eat a light snack about an hour before you ride. This can be things like power bars and fig cookies. This will give your body the little energy boost it needs.

Legacy Grant

Detroit Mountain Recreation Area has expanded its footprint thanks to a $1.2 million grant from the state’s Legacy Fund!

This grant allowed us to add a new Natural Playground Area, a skills trail, and 3 miles of new singletrack and 3 downhill trails. We also added new paving and landscaping around the tubing hill along with other improvements to the park.

The Legacy funds awarded by the state totaled $1,246,000. Detroit Mountain pledged a matching grant contribution of $250,000, and the City of Detroit Lakes pledged another $100,000 – bringing the grand total for the projects to $1,596,000!
